"This is Teeth of the Sea’s masterpiece" – Both Bars On reviews MASTER

Here is another review of Teeth of the Sea's forthcoming album MASTER, this time by Both Bars On:

Teeth Of The Sea: Master

We were privileged and honoured to be sent this album ahead of its release on 7th of October on Rocket Recordings. We’ve been kneeling for the MASTER for over four weeks now. Here’s our gushings…

Moments of utter jaw-dropping majesty abound on this album. Such instances of breath-taking scale come early on – around four and half minutes into opening track ‘Reaper’ to be almost precise. And from there, the expansive-cum-cosmic is heralded midway through the brilliant ‘Black Strategy’ or again in the swirling phantasms of ‘Siren Spectre’.

From such a description you might think this is an album all about ascension and transcendence, especially given the Christ like figure that centres the artwork:  with all-too-human innards on show, the heavenwards body takes leave of the earthly and the finite. Yet repeatedly this album has a claustrophobia bounded by the skin and the labyrinthine city that is firmly (under)grounded and bound to the earth: the visceral gonzoid noise-filth of ‘All Human Is Error’ being one example of this, or the paranoic poetry of ‘Put Me On Your Shoulders So I Can See The Rats’ being another. Master is composed as much by bodily discharge as heavenly effluvia.

The intriguing and beautifully schizoid nature of Master is again made evident on ‘Pleiades Underground/ Inexorable Master’. Seemingly a travelogue through the underworld and vast caverns of belittling grandeur, all sense of serene drifting and tranquil magnificence is disrupted and humiliated before a hellish vision given shape by a bastard-Beelzebub colossal riff. In the worlds of Teeth of the Sea, everything that seems perfected and at peace is actually diseased and conflicted...

The Guardian get psyched out on Goat and the current psych scene

This story about the current psych scene popped up in The Guardian today, and they proclaim "World Music album is regarded as a latterday psych classic":

Psychedelia is everywhere right now. There are original psychedelic bands making comebacks, and legions of young psychedelic bands, from Toy and Temples to Tame Impala. There is psychedelic celluloid, with an imminent biopic of guitar visionary Jimi Hendrix, starring André Benjamin of OutKast as the psychedelic dandy. There are psychedelic festivals, both in the UK and abroad, designed to showcase psychedelic talent, new and old, from across the globe. But it's not a surface culture of trippy hippies with flowers in their hair spreading the message of peace and love like we saw in 1967; it's about pockets of activity in every country, micro-scenes with a shared consciousness making contact via the web.

"What makes this version of psychedelia unique is the global nature of it," says Craig Pennington, organiser of the Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, which takes place over two days this weekend. "They've been brought together by the internet," he says of the thousands of zealots who will be converging on the city, and the dozens of acts on the bill. "We've got bands from Santiago in Chile and Mexico City alongside bands from LA and Denmark. You wouldn't have been able to have this in any other period in history. It's like a global psychedelic village."

The festival comprises "two days of worship" of the "weird and warped", with "mind-expanding visual delights" and music from guitar-bass-drums outfits stretching the possibilities of the standard rock band set-up to electronic artists. There are so many acts that it raises the question: is all music, if it's doing its job right (experimenting, blowing minds), psychedelic?

Time Out - review Teeth of the Sea's MASTER

Time Out have reviewed the new Teeth Of The Sea – 'Master'

'A bleak and unsettling post-rock record with one creepy eye on the dance floor'

Festering since 2006 in the dank crannies of the London underground music scene, Teeth Of The Sea have played more than anyone’s fair share of dingy pubs, damp basements and half-collapsed old warehouses. The band even formed at Electrowerkz – a former sheet metal factory in Islington that also hosts the longest running goth club night in the world – and all that concrete, mould, dust and rust seems to have rubbed off on their music: a gloomy hybrid of Throbbing Gristle-style electronica, post-rock and hyper-creepy ambience. Basically, if Derek Jarman was making his nihilistic, post-apocalyptic London film ‘Jubilee’ now, Teeth Of The Sea would be a shoo-in for the soundtrack.

Louder Than War reviews Hills - Master Sleeps album

Louder Than War reviews Hills - Master Sleeps album. Read what Brett Savage has to say about the album:

'Swedish band Hills re-released their second album on the brilliant Rocket Recordings last week. A psych classic it originally came out on a small Swedish label a couple of years ago, but due to the upsurge in interest in the genre the time has been deemed ripe for a
re-release. Does it warrant it?.......'

'Something of a minor classic'

The Quietus tip Teeth of the Sea as 'Ones to watch' at this weekend Incubate Festival

Incubate festival is well underway and this Saturday Teeth of the Sea will take the stage playing tracks from their soon to be released MASTER album.

The Quietus wrote a piece on the top 13 acts you must see and this is what they said about our own Teeth of the Sea:

Teeth Of The Sea
013, Stage 1; Saturday 14:30-15:15

Anyone who frequents these pages will know that we're rather big fans of these guys, but then, why wouldn't you be? They weld fist-pump-triumphant synth-rock to the cloaked bombast of a psychological thriller soundtrack, and do so on stratospheric scale. Add to this the facts that their new album Master, which gets released next month, has song titles like 'Pleiades Underground' (the track itself places gargantuan power chord volleys within Zimmer-esque intensity) and their live show is never less than euphoric - as their recent slot at the Quietus Five Years Party evidenced - and it becomes clear that they trounce just about anyone else who wields a guitar and keyboard. Attendance is mandatory, the Master demands it.

First review of Teeth of the Sea's MASTER

So here is the first review of Teeth of the Sea's up and coming third album MASTER:

TEETH OF THE SEA – MASTER (2013)
Beat-driven, electronic techno mayhem abounds on Teeth of The Sea’s third album, from the motoric drumming and gristly, throbbing basslines of “Reaper” to the tribal Burundi beats of “All Human Is Error” and the Giorgio Moroder-inspired “Black Strategy”.

TOTS are careful not to get swallowed up in meandering, boring electronic excursions, and continue to play to their strengths by grafting accessible melodies onto their krautrocky rhythms. In this regard, they will appeal to fans of New Order, Depeche Mode, Neu, and Throbbing Gristle.

The band get sidetracked a few times with superfluous spoken-word experiments, but, overall, the variety across these tracks will have you hypnotically entranced one minute and hopping on your pogo stick the next. Toss in a few economically placed guitar solos and mix liberally with creepy-crawly horror film soundtracks (“Pleiades Underground”), ambient spacey atmospherics (“Siren Spectre”), gloom ‘n’ doom death metal (“Inexorable Master”), and a little bit of all of the above (the epic “Responder”) and you’ve got an album that’ll please just about everyone, no matter what your sonic pleasure.

Q magazine give a short interview with Hills

Ahead of Monday's release of the Hills album Master Sleeps, Q have asked the band some Who? What? Why? Where? When?  questions:

Having helped bring Goat to a wider world, Swedish psych types Hills are back with their own album Master Sleeps on Monday (16 September). Guitarist Pelle take on Q's 5Ws...

WHO would play you in the film of your life?
George Best

WHAT are you currently working on?
Dinner. And alternative ways of using my body/mind so that I do not ever have to show up at work again and still get my paycheck. Seems tricky though..

WHY do you do that thing you do?
Well I consider it my cosmic duty and I do not have to many other alternatives at my disposal at this moment to be honest.

WHERE do you see yourself in ten years?
Hopefully doing something that gives meaning to my life possibly with the help of an endless collection of fuzz pedals.

WHEN will there be a harvest for the world?
There already is full on harvesting all around us all of the time we just need to recognise it!

Mojo Premiere Teeth of the Sea track – Black Strategy

Mojo Magazine have premiered the new Teeth of the Sea track Black Strategy, which is taken off their forthcoming album MASTER.

This is what they say:

TRAILING THE STYGIAN DEPTHS of a brilliant new album entitled Master, the group’s third, British post-Kraut intruMentalists Teeth Of The Sea offer Black Strategy, one of the best, most involving electroprog fusion freakouts we’ve heard in an ever. Somehow Goblin and Renegade Soundwave seem to coexist in this place of excitement. Imagine that lot having a barney.

It’s been a busy few years for TOTS, lauded by MOJO for their 2010 album, Your Mercury (we know writer-guitarist Jimmy Martin from the HMV shop under MOJO’s former offices), and subsequently branching out into fascinating collaborative work with Wire and live soundtrack experiments including Reaper and Beyond The Transfinite, as dancier elements emerged more strongly in their work.

The album, says an unusually well-written press release, promises “nods to the established Teeth Of The Sea touchstones of Throbbing Gristle, Goblin, Heldon, Angelo Badalamenti and Slayer, recent work by the like of Byetone, Pete Swanson, Raime, Powell and Prurient, alongside a long-standing fixation on the disco stylings of Patrick Cowley and Giorgio Moroder… Abrasive and sparkling electronic textures do battle with waves of incandescent noise and a merciless beat-driven imperative to form a powerful alchemical charge”. Couldn’t have put it better ourselves.
