Rocket Probes – January playlist

GNOD – Just Say No To The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine

Clap Bands gives Julie's Haircut a 9/10 album review

It reads (roughly translated):

Sisco Montalto - Three years after the last album - Ashram Equinox - come back on stage the Julie's Haircut and they do, again, with a highly distinctive work.

The path of Emilian band is always consistent with an experimental vision of music, which over the years has prevailed over everything else.

Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin, seventh work, is probably the pinnacle of the art of Julie's, the most mature album is said in these cases. In the new full length as well as a consolidated awareness of their capabilities (visionary) of composers, there is a completeness and perfection typical of those albums that hardly could repeat.

The disk structure, with long instrumental session, creates a kaleidoscope of abstract images and asymmetrical from entrelacement. Ecstasy abducts the listener, dragging in dense sound textures, full of unpredictable twists.

A succession of traditional sounds (electric guitars, piano, drums, synth) and "" artificial noise, old style between rock and electronics. The horn sections can give elegance that a record like you would not expect. The voice used by Julie's often as a further effect of the myriad of sound games, here becomes the protagonist in some cases even through effective texts that only increase the lysergic Album atmosphere.

The album starts quietly and then grow and explode in a swirl of sounds from the hypnotic rhythm. Gathering Light is the pinnacle before closing almost whispered Koan.

It 'a real ritual dance that of Julie's Haircut, a music without borders that would be a shame to label.

Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs album Feed the Rats is in Loud and Quiet's best albums of January...see it here: Loud and Quiet

And Echoes and Dust reviewed Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs album launch at the Lexington, it reads:

I was a tesla coil standing in the centre of a plasma globe and everything was fucking madness. In a siege of punks and vagabonds, first time gig-goers and the night-after-protest activists, I was as lost as anyone and with the burdening frustration dawning on us all, it made sense that we would amass at the epicentre of chaos and release; Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs at The Lexington...

Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation to release new version of Sister Green Eyes as a single

To coincide with their up & coming tour, Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation will be releasing a reworked version of their sultry album track, “Sister Green Eyes” on 24 February, this will be the bands third single from their much lauded album 2016 album Mirage.

Right from the outset, “Sister Green Eyes” sensuously throbs to a more Eastern drive, with an sedated ‘Velvets’ droned melody, a fluctuating groove straight out of the ‘CAN’ little black book, it flirts around with the hue of a half-goned tranced-out Siouxsie Sioux. Richly hypnotic, the tribal procession of the tracks groove, more predominant than the album version, enamelled with Josefin’s almost broken breathless vocals, progresses like an oscillating raga as if the man machine spirit of recently deceased Jaki Liebezeit was soundtracking an eyelid movie.

As the band explains “Sister Green Eyes” was inspired by the Japanese word “Shinrinyoku” which is sometimes translated and often described as “Forest Bathing”, where submersing oneself so deeply into the atmosphere of the forest or in the band’s case, the Swedish ‘Ocean and Mountains’, that the experience is rejuvenating and restorative so showing you a way that can often seem lost or out of reach and Josefin’s vocals encapsulate that.

There will be an exclusive remix of Rushing through my Mind as the bside of the single, more to be revealed at a later date

The band are on tour in the UK through the end of February and beginning of March, dates below:

The Know interviews Gnoomes about new album Tschak!

It reads:

The Russian three-piece Gnoomes release their second record for Rocket Recordings, ‘Tschak!’ just eighteen months after their blissful debut at a suitably volatile time for the world. We had a chat with the guys about their new release.

The cover of your new record is quite striking, can you tell us about your choice of artwork for ‘Tschak!’?

The cover is relevant to the name of the album. We gave our LP the name ‘Tschak!’ apparently in homage to ‘Ngan!’ but primarily we wanted to connect our music to the Soviet times. This is because we used a lot of soviet analog gear during the production and the studio space where we recorded stuff was built in the 70s.

In our opinion ‘Tschak!’ is the sound of a soviet TV being switched off and when our label boss Chris Reeder showed us this option for the sleeve we were absolutely blown away because it fit to the idea perfectly!

Is there anything you’d like to tell us about the album? How were your inspirations and processes different from Ngan! and what do you hope listeners will get from the record?...

Psych Insight reviews Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin by Julie’s Haircut

It reads:

When the announcement of what apparently is the seventh album from Julie’s Haircut came in I have to say at I was a little underwhelmed. The title ‘Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin’ was not one that had me scurrying to the download button but, I thought, it’s from Rocket Recordings and as one of my ‘goto’ labels it had surely got to be at least worth a listen. My fear, I think, was that it might be the sort of music that I would struggle to find accessible. I was wrong, never judge a record (completely) by its cover, because this is just one amazing album; and in a minute I’m going to tell you why.

First of all I’m going to include some background that Rocket have provided as part of the information for the album, which was unusually helpful for a press release...

Introducing new GNOD album – Just Say No To The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine

We are excited to announce that GNOD have the new album 'Just Say No To The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine' released on 31 March.

You can listen to the track 'Bodies for Money' exclusively via Vice here: Noisey

You can preorder the album on ltd Red & Black Splatter (Rocket shop/band merch exclusive) here Rocket Recordings.

Or preorder digitally here: iTunes

The album will also be available on a ltd red vinyl at selected indie stores

The press release reads:

As we embark on a new year more characterised by fear and uncertainty than hope and optimism, a chronic shortage of dissent can be detected in the artistic community amidst a harrowing socio-political climate. Yet  the Salford-based collective Gnod have wasted little time in kicking against the doom and disquiet with everything at their disposal.

“It seems like we are heading towards even more unsettling times in the near future than we are in at present.” reckons Chris Haslam of Gnod. “2016 is just the beginning of what I see as the establishment’s systematic destruction of liberalism and equality as a reaction to the general public’s loss of faith in their system”

Charged by this outlook, Gnod's new album, ' Just Say No To The Psycho Right-Wing Capitalist Fascist Industrial Death Machine’ represents a hitherto uncharted level of antagonism and adversarial force for the band - an artistic statement as righteous, fervent and direct as its title. which far from being an echo of an anarcho spirit of yore, denotes a record firmly entrenched in the psychic terrain of 2017.

“On the surface it could almost seem like there's no political art movement out there to oppose what's happening, but there is -  we know there is” adds the band’s Paddy Shine. “Maybe that movement is struggling to find its voice as a cohesive whole right now but that will change. It has to change.”

Fuelled by their militant drive and unyielding ardour, ‘Just Say No…’ refracts Gnod’s harsh and repetitive riff-driven rancour through a psychotropic haze of dubbed-out abstraction, with Paddy’s incendiary vocal delivery to the fore. ,‘Just SayNo…sounds like a record only Gnod could make - a band fiercely independent, never comfortable in one place artistically for any duration of time, always with their co-ordinates set on uncharted territory and the next challenge ahead, and delivering a monument of ire and iconoclasm.

The Quietus reviews Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – Feed the Rats

It reads:

The pig has several connotations. Most civilisations and cultures have seen them as arbiters of fertility, virility, strength and abundance. The Buddhist tradition swings the other way, seeing the pig as ignorant, illusory, greedy, lustful. Other religions see them as unclean. Then there is the Celtic fable of Manannan, who owned a herd of pigs that never dwindled – they were forever replenishing their numbers.

I could go on. The point is that the pig is multifaceted and almost indefinable – a shifting construct for people to hang their hopes and fears on. It is also a heave bag of flesh that wallows in mud and shit all day until taken to the slaughterhouse. A myriad of strong, indelible, contradictory images, fit for a Newcastle heavy psych band that can’t reign in their swine (although they have reined in members of likeminded noisemongers Khunnt and Blown Out). And to predictably muddy the waters further, they bring another animal into the mix, one with even stronger connotations – but much clearer in intent...

Gods in the TV reviews Feed the rats by Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs

It reads:

Feed the Rats is the absolutely devastating LP from Newcastle five-piece Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs, Pigs (or Pigs X 7 as they are affectionately known). Borne out of the bands Ommadon, Blown Out, Khunnt, Pigs  X 7’s Feed the Rats is the coming together of like minds to produce an album that is 36.45 minutes long and has three tracks on it. Already you know this isn’t going to be easy listening.  But downloading or buying an LP by a band called Pigs X 7 never would be, would it? And all the better for it, I say.

Opener ‘Psychopomp’ starts with pounding drums (high in the mix, nice) and has a heavy as shit slow bass riff. Corrosive guitar comes in and the mad banshee wailing of the lead singer. The simplistic bass riff is so bloody effective and drives this throbbing, unrelenting track on its brutal attack on all senses. Half way through, it slows down to a halt that allows everyone to catch their breath.  But the respite is short. The bass and noise kicks back in and the vocals summon up all kinds of demons and wickedness at this distortion pedal and gain driven, amplified dirge alter. Absolutely punishing stuff...

Loud and Quiet reviews Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – Feed the Rats

It reads:

If you name your band Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs (hereby referred to as Pigs x7), you’re immediately opening yourself up for a certain amount of mockery. The Newcastle five piece are all too aware of that, and their blistering three-song debut album ‘Feed the Rats’ revels in its ridiculousness. I mean, surely no one can scream “I AM THE DEMON! I AM THE NIGHT! I AM ADONIS!” and mean it, let alone on a song called ‘Psychopomp’, right? Bookended by two tracks which brazenly pass the fifteen minute mark, it’s an LP marked by Matt Baty’s primordial invocations, which sound like they were recorded from the top of a mountain, and bludgeoning detuned guitars, designed to blow your speakers.

There are shades of Sabbath and Sleep, while Baty’s vocal on ‘Sweet Relief’ echoes Lemmy’s sorely-missed emphysemic rasp. The slow burns, bone-on-cave-wall drums and sludgy riffs aren’t going to be everyone’s cup of blood, but as howls into the void go, the Pigs are alright.

Five Rise Records say some words on Julie's Haircut

It says:

One of the great things about being a music fan is discovering artists you’ve never heard before. That feeling you get on first listen, then instantly falling in love with them straight away. It’s the similar feeling you get when you find a fiver in your jeans you’ve not worn for a while. That joy and buzz. Then thinking “how did i not know it was here”. It’s a very similar discovering new artists, and thinking “how come I’ve not heard these until now”?

This is the exact feeling I had when I first heard Italian noise mongers ‘Julie’s Haircut’, the opening bars of Gathering Light, the new track taken from the upcoming album Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin, Released on Rocket Recordings: http://www.fiveriserecords.co.uk/product/julies-haircut-invocation-ritual-dance-demon-twin/. It sounded like David Holme’s ‘I Heard Wonders’ with added Mogwai, a pinch of My Bloody Valentine and a hint of Sonic Youth thrown in for good measure. Mixed up in a blender, simmered, stirred then served…. the result? Well…..just blooming fantastic!...

Birthday Cake For Breakfast reviews Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs – Feed the Rats

It reads:

On the last Saturday of May 2016, I headed down to Manchester institution The Star and Garter to see a line-up of super noisy rock bands. Out of the four band bill, there was one I hadn’t heard of before – five chaps from Newcastle who go by the name of Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs.

I’ve since discovered that this lot have been making sizable waves on the underground for a little now and with a set like the one I saw, I completely understand why. To be honest they blew my balls off, man. They played an unrelenting set of psyched out stoner-rock with such intensity and conviction that hypnotized everyone in the room to full on head-banging mode...

Gnoomes announce stunning new album 'Tschak!' – listen to first track via The Quietus

We are overwhelmingly proud to announce the new album 'Tschak' by Russian band Gnoomes. It will be released on all formats on 10 March.

You can listen to 'Cascais' – the stunning first track taken from the album exclusively via The Quietus: The Quietus

You can preorder the album on Ltd edition Green Vinyl and CD here: Rocket Bandcamp

Or preorder the digital version and receive 'Cascais' straight away here: iTunes

The press release reads:

Gnoomes - Tschak!
From adversity can come triumph, and from catharsis inspiration. Such has been the case for Gnoomes, the threesome hailing from Perm, Russia, whose second release for Rocket Recordings, ‘Tschak!’ arrives in the wake of considerable turbulence and tumult within their city and lives, all of which has only been fuel for a creative epiphany that has seen them create a deeply evocative work rich with vibrant experimentation and saturated in a widescreen sense of wonder.

It may only have been eighteen months since ‘Ngan!’, the band’s first release for Rocket, whose self-styled ‘stargaze’ approach marked a glorious collision between melodic sweetness, skysurfing guitar experimentation and motorik magnificence, yet the band have already moved on to a sonic landscape still more adventurous and ethereal on ‘Tschak!’, not to mention an emotionally resonant approach that’s bewitching to witness. Taking in torrents of guitar noise and electronic extrapolations both blissfully kosmische and aggressively abrasive, it exists outside of all or any convenient genres, a vivid and singular work by three dreamers-at-heart forced to manifest their vision into a psychic defence to the circumstances surrounding them.

Working in splendid isolation thanks to a studio space provided by their work for a local radio station, the band had time and space for the alchemical process of creating ‘Tschak!’ entirely on their own terms. Central to the this were a collection of Russian synths that they gathered, whose eccentric arpeggios and analogue textures form crucial ingredients on songs like ‘Severokamsk’ and the title track, arriving at a sound that forms a star-crossed and timeless marriage between the experimentation of krautrock and the lineage of Warp Records.

Forging forth into unknown realms both physical and metaphysical, the band recently completed a UK tour - including an appearance at Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia. Yet with the dreamlike radiance of the potent and otherworldly ‘Tschak!’ on their side, this adventure is already well on its way.
